Some news about our Route 66 in Kansas book

This past week, Joe Sonderman and I received some news about our Route 66 in Kansas pamphlet, er, book. (As expected, we have taken a lot of ribbing about producing a whole book about 13 miles of our favorite highway!)

 Anyway, Arcadia Publishing informed us of the publication/release date of Route 66 in Kansas. Talk about patriotic. Our official release date is July 4th! We had guessed that the book would likely be released in May, since that is roughly six months after our materials submission date. But that's okay. We think July 4th is cool. 

 Tentatively we will have some book signings in July and/or August in Galena and Baxter Springs. We'll post those dates once they're firmed up. And one or both of us will be at the following festivals with the new book:

 The other piece of news is that we received all our page proofs for the book this past week! So we will be going over the book for the last time before publication.

With the 2017 Route 66 event season in full swing, my pertussis quarantine over, and an itch to go places in the new van, June proved to be a busy month. Between St. Louis and Chicago, I gave a program, attended a program, went to the Route 66 exhibit at Missouri History Museum twice, drove across the Chain of Rocks Bridge, sold and signed books, and, with my BCC colleagues, produced the third annual Blue Carpet Corridor festival weekend. Here's a brief rundown of my June: June 1 - At Jubelt's  in Litchfield, I met up with Bill Kelly, Executive Director of Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, and Dave Tucker, Vice-President of Blue Carpet Corridor, for hand-off of materials for Blue Carpet Corridor weekend. Day #4 of another road trip - a little neon to say good night

This morning I heard from three of our conference speakers on various details about their presentations. Wow! What an amazing gathering this event is going to be! If you've been thinking about registering for our Halloween weekend event, this would be a great time while you can still get rooms in our host hotel block at the discounted rate.  www.bluecarpetcorridor.org/rt66conference Today I had a long, good, productive day up in Baxter Springs. I spent most of the day at the Heritage Center down in the archives, finding a few more goodies and scanning them. Then it was out and about town to take  some photos and also compare sites with old photos. This evening I made a special trip back downtown in Miam-uh to grab some Blue Hour neon shots of the Waylan's KukuBurger and Coleman Theatre signs. But for whatever reason, neither one was on! So i settled for these. Happy neon dreams, everyone.

Sixth Annual Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference is planned for October 2021

The Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference is back this year with its sixth annual event, to be held virtually Thursday – Sunday, October 21 – 24, 2021. This year's theme is “A Worldwide Celebration of Route 66,” emphasizing the love of Route 66 and its collegiality that is truly an international phenomenon. To that end, this year's slate of speakers and presenters comes to you from across all eight Route 66 states and from locations around the world. Embracing the virtual format, the organizers have created a truly “worldwide” event!  The by-now familiar conference format plus social activities will be followed again this year with a few new twists.
